The summers have finally arrived. Your friends and family must have already started making summer plans. You will hit the beach this weekend and have a BBQ next week.

Going to the beach sounds fun, but you might be worried about the BBQ foods. If you want to stay in shape, watch out for the following BBQ foods that can make you fat.

1. Burgers

Burgers top the list of BBQ fattening foods. Most beef burgers are cooked with 80 lean ground beef. It contains about 425 calories.

If you go for chicken, pulled pork or hamburgers the calorie count is over 300. Not to forget, the buns, sauces, and condiments would add up to over 500 calories.

Replace the buns with lettuce and have less fattening burger patties, like grilled chicken, turkey, or tofu to stay in shape.

2. Coleslaw

Wait, did you just read Coleslaw? Isn’t it supposed to be a healthy side dish? Well, it is healthy with all the shredded carrots and cabbages.

But the blobs of mayonnaise, makes it fattening for you.  Substitute the mayo with natural organic vinegar for healthier and fresher coleslaw.

3. Barbeque Sauce

Can you have a BBQ party without a barbeque sauce? Sadly the smoky sweet condiment is fattening for you. Most BBQ sauces have high fructose corn syrup for sweetness.

Instead of marinating your chicken with spoonfuls of BBQ sauce use vinegar, olive oil, lemon, and smoked spices. Replace BBQ sauce as a condiment with hot sauce or smoked sriracha sauce.

4. Beer

Stop before you gulp down a glass or two of cold beer. It has about 120 to 150 calories. Even the light beer has 150 calories.

Go for vodka with soda water or tequila shots with lime. You will consume only 70-80 calories.

5. Potato Salad

Potatoes are not bad for your health. But eating a dish of starchy vegetables with mayo or cream can make you fat.

Add vinegar instead of mayo or cream to make it less fattening. Or even better make sweet potato salad.

6. Pie

For the love of pie can you not! We wish, but we couldn’t help adding pie to this list. The dessert is fattening up everyone around. Blueberry pie, cherry pie, pumpkin pie, or apple pie, you name it.

All the pies have over 400-500 calories per piece. So what to do, nibble up on a tiny piece. Yes, you could do that. Or you can have a fruit salad with chopped nuts and low-fat yogurt for dessert.

Apple pie has the least calories than the other pies. The filling is already sweet with natural fruit sugar, so you don’t have to add extra sugar, which is great for your health.

Final Thoughts

The BBQ foods mentioned above are fattening, and you should avoid them to stay in shape and maintain a healthy weight.

Plan a healthy barbeque with your friends and family. Enjoy healthier versions of BBQ foods while staying fit.
